Your drive belt performs a number of important tasks. It powers your alternator. The alternator in turn charges your battery. Your battery powers your entire electrical system. This includes power to your spark plugs, your windshield wipers, your navigation system, your audio and video systems - everything on your GMC Sierra pickup.
Your Sierra drive belt also powers your power steering pump and your air conditioning compressor. If your power steering pump should stop operating, you will experience difficulty steering. If your a/c compressor stops working, you will experience a total loss of air conditioning.
If your GMC Sierra drive belt should break, immediately drive to a repair shop. Tip: you should still be able to drive a short distance with the power stored in your battery but you will notice a power loss. Remember: it is wise to carry a spare belt.
Most repair manuals suggest checking your Sierra's drive belt every 12 months or every 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check your belt for fraying, breaks, glazing (shiny areas anywhere on the belt), tears, streaks on the sidewall (this also could mean it is improperly adjusted), separation of the belt's "piles," and oil soaking. If there is oil-soaking on the belt, it means there is an oil leak somewhere. Seek out the leak and repair it immediately. Check the engine, transmission, and power steering pump.
